This Higher National Diploma has been specifically designed to equip students with theoretical knowledge, understanding and the applicable skills for a successful employment trajectory within the world of Sports. The overarching aim of this Higher National Diploma is to demonstrate student’s competence in applying learnt skills, knowledge and professional development when working directly in an administrative and eventually managerial position.

The overarching aim of this Higher National Diploma is to demonstrate student’s competence in applying learnt skills, knowledge and professional development when working directly in an administrative and eventually managerial position.
The programme provides the required experiences to link theory to practice, developing skills and competencies as well as personal qualities and attitudes which are essential for sports management. During the course, students will be encouraged to engage in critical and reflective discussions related to the Sports sector. Furthermore, students will also be able to make use of the practical tools related to different aspects of sports and management.
Knowledge: Learners will be exposed to the theoretical and practical features of Sports Management. Students begin with an introduction the world of sports, administration and management. The guiding principles of leadership and management are presented, prior to exposing students to focused roles within the sports industry, such as; marketing, organisation strategy, sports psychology, event planning, journalism, governance and finance. As part of the entire course, students will be exposed to an introduction to research methods as part of theoretical components of the course. The research methods module provides all students with he necessary preparation to conduct small-Level 5 research projects within an existing sports organisation/facility, in view of furthering their studies to MQF Level 6 top-up courses.
Skills: Learners will develop an awareness and understanding of the external and internal factors that affect effective management of a sports organisation, comprehend the importance and role of psychology and governance, to ensure a sustainable operation is maintained within the field of sports.
Competencies: Learners will be able to exercise self-management within the sports industry, implement specific project and team strategies, monitor progress of change implementation and be held accountable for the needs of the organisation. In doing so, they will be competent and fully aware of the importance of people leadership and management, sport industry trends and collaborate with various departments and stakeholders. Target Audience & Occupation This Higher National Diploma is suitable for individuals who wish to work, or who are currently working within the Sports industry and are looking to further their knowledge. Furthermore, the course also targets those aspiring for managerial positions with the field of sports. On completion of the Diploma, successful learners can apply for employment within the sports sector and will have benefited from this up-skilling learning experience. Students will be able to undertake further studies within Sports Management, work towards a promotion in the current occupation and/or simply aim at personal and professional development. The course prepares students to work within the administrative or managerial aspects of a sporting organisation. Students shall be able to secure jobs in different areas, including;
- Events Management Organisations;
- Sports Marketing Organisations;
- Local Sport Clubs & Amateur Sport Organisations; and
- Player Management Organisations.
Successful students who complete successfully the two-year Higher National Diploma in Sports Management (120 ECTS) can progress to Level 6 qualifications (suggested progression would be to MQF Level 6 Undergraduate Degree in Sports Management).

Students shall be receiving a hands-on experience related to the competencies outlined in all of the other modules making this programme. Students shall therefore be tested on the competencies outlined in previous modules.

Assessment Criteria
Active Participation (10%) – Students are required to contribute to group discussions in class, and to take an active part when requested to participate in in-class activities. Students are also expected to actively take suggestions and ideas from peers or teammates. Frequent questions and asking for clarifications are also expected from students. Ability to work well as an independent and group learner. Placement (80%) – Completed the 200 hours of placement whereby students are expected to put into practice the theory that they have learnt in class. Portfolio(10%) – The student is expected to present a portfolio of the work conducted during the duration of the placement. The portfolio will be assessed and marked as part of the overall mark for the placement module (2,500 words). All modules are mandatory to qualify for this complete 120 ECTS MQF Level 5 Diploma. However, students may choose to study singular modules, at their own pace, based on a selective-modular basis. This option is ideal for those currently working within the industry, looking to up-skill in a specific area of sports, for example, events management. Students who fail to pass/complete all mandatory units will be given exit Awards from Avanza Training Academy, detailing the specific modules achieved and the number of ECTS/ECVETs gained. *As part of the course, students are requested to complete a work-based learning placement within a Sports organisation/facility for a total of 200 hours. All placements are arranged by Avanza Training Academy to ensure all students are provided with mentoring support from the respective organisation Owner/Manager.
Research Project – EQF/MQF Level 5 – 10 ECTS
- Manage one’s own research effectively;

Assessment Criteria
Supervisor Observation 20%; Project 80%.
Award in Business & Communication (MQF Level 4, 60 ECTS) awarded by Avanza Academy or comparable qualifications; OR Matriculation Certification and Secondary Education Certificate holding Maths, English and Maltese at Grade 5 or better or comparable qualifications; OR Mature Students as per Avanza Academy’s Internal Quality Assurance document. Individuals applying under the clause of mature students may be asked to sit for an interview or aptitude test prior to the admission to the course.
Each module will be assessed based on a mixture of formative and summative assessments methods; Formative; Individual/Group Presentations, Discussions, Classroom/Placement Observations. All formative assessment methods will occur during each module and Tutors will provide students with ongoing feedback throughout the course. Summative; End of Module Exam (where applicable) Module Essay, End of Course Case Study and Placement Assessment. All summative assessment methods will occur at the end of each module and evaluate student learning.
